A yeast infection happens when the fungus that causes it is able to overgrow because of a weakened immune system and/or good bacteria in your body being killed. The fungus called Candida Albicans lives normally on us and is usually harmless, but as soon as conditions allow it to grow and spread it becomes a yeast infection. Symptoms are itching, pain, swelling, redness and discharge. There are several ways to treat it once you know what you have. Visit a doctor for a prescribed anti fungal ointment, visit the pharmacy for over the counter creams and suppositories or visit mother nature!
There are many effective natural treatments for yeast infections but the most popular of them is yogurt. Yup all you need to do is take a trip to your local grocery store and get some yogurt but make sure it is the right kind. You do not want anything added to it, it has to be plain, no added fruit and definitely no added sugar. Sugar is a food for the yeast, it will help it grow! You also want a live cultered yogurt, the type they advertise nowadays that has good bacteria in it.
You can use the yogurt in a few ways. First of all eat it! Try to eat a generous amount daily to top up your internal good bacteria. You can also use it directly on the infection. Spread it on with your fingers, or dilute with some watter and put in a spray bottle and spray it on. If it is a vaginal infection you can dip a tampon in the yogurt and then insert it for benefits to the vaginal canal.
Using yogurt will not only get you more good bacteria which is what keeps the yeast under control, it will also provide a wonderful soothing sensation to the itching and burning symptoms. Just keep using it until the infection is gone.
If yogurt is not as successful as you would like there is also a product that is gaining in populariy called Yeasterol, which comes in the form of a spray. As you can see your doctor or the pharmacist are not your only treatment options now.
