The most common form of a yeast infection is vaginal and it is therefore seen as a female problem, but in fact yeast infections can occur in anyone and in several places of the body including the nails. Often those who work with water more, are more susceptible as moisture gets under the nails. A yeast infection of the nails is not the same as a fungal nail infection. A fungal nail infection will slowly turn a nail black and make it crumble. Yeast infection of the nails has different symptoms.
Symptoms that indicate you may have yeast infection of the nails are brittle nails that appear white, yellow or even green in color. The nails are weak and may chip easily when trying to open things. The shine will go and the bottom area of the nail, near the cuticle may swell. It can be sore to touch there and there can even be puss. Around the nail the tissue is sometimes tender, swollen and red. A yeast infection of the nails can do a lot of damage to the nail bed itself as well as the nail, even causing the nail to lift which can take months to heal in some severe cases.
The infection can come on slowly or just all of a sudden and can spread quite quickly to all the nails including toe nails. Sometimes as well as the yeast infection there is also paronychia to deal with as bacteria get in there too. If looking for a treatment at home try soaking your fingers in diluted apple cider vinegar as yeast does not like this. But if you have extended symptoms such as pain up the arm or leg, fever or lymph nodes that have swollen you need to see a doctor.
To prevent a yeast infection of the nails avoid over washing your hands as yeast loves damp warm areas. Try to limit how often you wear artificial nails and if you have your nails done professionally make sure they clean their equipment properly. Keep your feet and hands as dry as possible, use powders if you need to and when socks get wet, change them.
If you are unsure whether you have a fungal infection or yeast infection let a doctor take some cuttings and scrapings to diagnose it professionally. Treatment for each case is different, what works for a fungal will not be effective against a yeast infection of the nails, so it is important to get a proper diagnosis. Sometimes a person with a yeast infection of the nails will need to use alcohol and thymol a couple of times a day and there are prescribed or over the counter medications that can be used. Do be aware that treatment can be over many months especially in severe cases.
