There are a group of yeasts or fungi that live on the body and commonly attack the skin known as Candida. When in culture the colour of these micro organisms is white hence the name ‘Candida’. When an infection occurs it is also refered to as candidiasis, candidosis, moniliasis or commonly a yeast infection.
Candida live in the digestive tract and stays there usually causing no harm. But of the human host becomes weakened somehow it can overgrow causing an infection where it is warm and moist such as the anus, mouth, genitals and under folds of skin. In rare cases it can cause a systemic infection affecting internal organs and the whole body.
The most common candida species that leads to a yeast infection are Candida Albicans but there are others including: Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, Candida guilliermondii and Candida glabrata.
Skin infections resulting from the candida fungus include:
• Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis
• Chronic paronychia – infection of the nail fold
• Balantis – infection of the penis
• Intertrigo – infection of skin folds
• Oral candidiasis – oral infection / Thrush
• Napkin dermatitis – diaper infection
• Onychomycosis – infection of nail plates
• Vulvovaginal candidiasis – female genital infection
Factors that can put you more at risk from a candida infection include:

• The very young or elderly
• Warm weather
• Synthetic and/or tight clothing
• Immune deficiencies such as caused by HIV
