The yeast strain that causes yeast infections is known as Candida and the specific fungus is Candida albicans. The fungus thrives in environments that are warm, damp and dark and therefore loves areas like the mouth and the vagina. In fact the yeast already lives on us but is usually harmless unless conditions change to allow it to grow. Vaginal yeast is present in twenty five per cent of healthy women. Hormonal changes are one of the factors that can lead to yeast infections.

There are are several causes including antibiotics, steroids, diabetes, pregnancy, poor diet, birth control pills, menstruation, weak immune system due to illnesses like cancer and HIV and menopause. Stress can also be a factor as allergies, tiredness, skin problems, digestive issues and memory problems all worsen. As you can see there are several hormonal causes in that group which this article is going to focus on.

When particular hormones are released into the body especially during menstruation, ovulation or pregnancy, a woman becomes more susceptable.

Cortisol

During strressful times an anti inflammatory hormone called Cortisol is produced by adrenals. Cortisol’s job is to break down tissues so that sugar is released along with proteins and nutrients for muscles and organs during stress. So that the Cortisol is kept in balance the body releases Dhea; it slows down how much Cortisol is released and those tissues are rebuilt. But if you are stressed for a long period of time Cortisol will keep releasing, which as well as raising your blood sugar is also weakening your immune system. The Cortisol also kills some of the good bacteria in your body. This all means you are more likely to get a yeast infection because a) your immune system is weakened, b) the good bacteria that normally keep that yeast under control have been killed, and c) yeast feeds on sugar and the increased blood sugar levels will help it grow.

Progesterone and Estrogen

When women undergo hormone therapy this can cause yeast infections as an imbalance between Progesterone and Estrogen occurs. This negatively affects the good bacteria again which means the Candida can over grow. So whether there is an excess of either of these hormones and/or an imbalance it directly affects the yeast’s rate of growth.
Though there are other causes of yeast infections, for women hormonal are one of the primary reasons.
