If you have a problem with internal Candida overgrowth you have probably noticed various symptoms, and if you have spoken to a doctor about it, you have probably been ignored. Problems that candida can cause are so varied and linked with a number of different health issues. But those toxins it releases, over 70 of them, can cause physical, emotional and mental issues, wreaking havoc on you and your daily life. The following is specifically about how candida affects depression.

Candida albicans

Candida is not something you get infected with, like a dermatophyte yeast for example or a bad virus. Candida already lives in the human body but in small numbers so that it doesn’t hurt you or cause any negative symptoms. It is not the only microorganism that lives in us, there are many, some harmless, some actually that need as part of our immune system like the friendly, good or beneficial bacteria, also called probiotics. These are actually part of the police force of our immune system that control the candida and make sure it does not overgrow. Sometimes this system fails though, through diet, stress, antibiotics and so on. Then the candida albicans goes from benign yeast to a pathogenic fungus releasing over 70 toxins into our body. It is those toxins that cause the various symptoms and it is in this way how candida affects depression.

How candida affects depression specifically

It is quite possible you have been suffering with depression, even been taking depression medication and it is being caused by candida overgrowth. Many people who have worked out that candida is the problem will have found that their doctors were not that receptive to the idea. Some think you are a hypochondriac, some think its stress, or part of the depression. It may be too that you are not communicating with your doctor as clearly as you might have been if you were not dealing with the symptoms. Take a look at just some of the mental symptoms that have been attributed to the overgrowth of candida;

Headaches

Fatigue

Fogginess

Feeling overwhelmed

Anxiety

Unable to concentrate

Mood swings

Feeling low

Poor memory

Irritability

Learning difficulties

Treatment

This site does not recommend coming off medication without talking to your doctor first. However you can talk to your doctor about dealing with your candida and if you get nowhere with that doctor you can try others. You can also take steps to deal with the candida yourself and then talk with them about changing or reducing your medication to see if this helps. Look to your diet and cut out sugars, and foods that feed the fungus. Avoid antibiotics that kill the good bacteria in your body. Try to find ways to relax and manage stress. Take probiotic supplements and make sure you are getting enough nutrients in your diet, or supplement those too. You can detox to help clear out your system and there are alternative treatments to consider such as herbal, homeopathic, and so on. Again check it is okay to use any of these with any anti-depression medication you are taking.

Candida albicans in the lungs treatment is necessary for those who have a systemic form of candida that has entered the blood stream and is affecting internal organs such as the lungs. This is not something that is a problem for a lot of people, in general if you have a yeast infection it is an external one, and for people with internal candida overgrowth this is still not going to affect internal organs unless it enters the blood stream. It does that by perforating small holes into the gut. Here is some general information on candida, who may be affected by candida in the lungs, and candida albicans in the lungs treatment options.

Candida

Almost everyone has some amount of Candida in them, men and women, and all ages. Candida when in small and controlled numbers is benign yeast meaning it does not harm you. Good or friendly bacteria are part of the system that make sure the number of yeast stays low. But there are various things that can affect that balance, antibiotics, diet, lifestyle and so on which can lead to Candida being able to multiply freely. At this point it changes into a pathogenic fungus. Over 70 different toxins are released by it into your body so the more Candida there is, the more toxins there are in your body causing a potentially large number of symptoms.

That is what happens in an otherwise healthy person. For someone with an already weakened immune system the situation can be different. For patients in critical care who already have a weakened immune system there is the risk of biofilms forming on things like catheters and instruments used on them. A biofilm is a large colony of candida, and when the instrument is inserted into the patient the candida gets into the blood this way. Candida in the blood means it can get to all and any internal organ, the heart, the kidneys, the lungs and it can get to the brain and eyes too. It can cause some serious health problems, especially if the patient is already weakened.

Candida albicans in the lungs treatment options

It is important to get the right treatment if you do have a systemic fungal infection as the consequences can be fatal. Symptoms of a blood infection include fever, anemia, chills, a rash, shock, and then symptoms depending on the organ or organs affected. For the lungs this may include breathing difficulties, a bloody mucus discharge, fatigue, weakness, chest pains and loss of appetite.

There are several anti-fungal medications that can be used and if possible any antibiotic treatment on going should be stopped. Choice of candida albicans in the lungs treatment is also chosen based on the patients underlying condition, risk factors and whether the candida is resistant to some options. Drugs that can be used include;

Caspofungin

Anidulafungin

Micafungin

Fluconazole

Voriconazole

Posaconazole

Amphotericin B

The most common response a person has when they find they have a yeast infection is to go to a pharmacy and choose an OTC yeast infection treatment (OTC meaning over the counter). We are very fortunate in the amount of choice in treatment we have today for yeast infections, not so long ago the only way to get an anti-fungal medicated treatment would have been to see a doctor first. However this convenience has led to some problems of people, particularly women, misdiagnosing themselves. It is important to remember that even when using an OTC yeast infection treatment you should have a confirmed diagnosis from your doctor or health professional. OTC yeast infection treatment options are anti-fungals not anti-bacterials or anti-virals. If you have something else with similar symptoms, for example bacterial vaginitis, an OTC yeast infection treatment will do nothing for it and the infection will continue on untreated. While 75% of women will get a yeast infection at some time in their lives, about two thirds of women think they have a yeast infection when in fact they have something else.

Medications available over the counter

Common anti-fungal medications used as active ingredients in over the counter yeast infection treatments include butoconazole, clotrimazole, terconazole, tioconazole, miconazole and terbinafine. There are a large number of brand names but key to selecting an OTC yeast infection treatment is to look at the active ingredient and to learn what works best for you. Some people respond better to butoconazole treatments and others find that ineffective but have better success with terconazole treatments. Selecting your treatment may involve having to try a number of products until you find one that works. If none seem effective you may, as mentioned, have misdiagnosed yourself and you should see a doctor, or your infection may be too severe for over the counter strengths and you may need something at prescription strength.

Who can use an OTC yeast infection treatment?

If you are diabetic, HIV positive, pregnant, breastfeeding, have a fever, abdominal pain, or a discharge that smells bad you should not use an OTC treatment but should see your doctor. If you have had a yeast infection before, been to a doctor, and now recognize the symptoms have returned you can go straight to an over the counter treatment. Make sure you use the full course of treatment and follow the instructions. Often symptoms will go before the treatment has finished and people make the mistake of stopping which causes the infection to return again because there was still some fungus remaining. Side effects can include an allergic reaction in rare cases. More common ones include itching, irritation, burning and needing to urinate more frequently. When using suppository treatments do not use tampons, switch to sanitary pads. If you take blood thinning medication there can be some interaction with miconazole yeast infection treatments.

Forms of treatment

OTC treatments come in various forms and which one you chose is just about personal preference, creams, suppositories, pill, and so on. Keep in mind that the difference in the length of treatment does not mean that the infection is cured in that amount of time. A one day pill still takes up to 7 days to treat the infection; it is just a stronger dose of medication all in one dose. A 3 day treatment is not as potent but still stronger than a 7 day treatment course. Usually the shorter the course you opt for the more expensive the OTC yeast infection treatment.

Candida is something that affects most people at some point in their lives, as it is a yeast that already lives on many of us, but in small numbers it causes no ill effect. When the numbers increase the pathogenic fungus releases toxins into our body, and it is those toxins that cause the symptoms of yeast infection or candida overgrowth. If you talk to people who have had candida problems you will quickly discover that there are many opinions on candida treatments, whether you should use natural or medicated, over the counter or prescribed, diets, cleanses, supplements and so on. Opinions on candida treatments are mostly just that though, opinions. In many cases people have to find out what works best for their own body which is often a combination of approaches if you want to truly become candida free.

Symptom relief

The problem with a lot of treatments is they are just about relieving your symptoms and while that is important, unless you treat the actual problem the yeast infection is likely to recur. Opinions on candida treatments tend to agree that becoming candida clear involves more than just applying a cream for a few days or taking a supplement. You need to look at the root cause, make some changes, possibly change your diet, cleanse, and top up your good bacteria as well as using an anti-fungal treatment. An effective treatment doesn’t just give you some relief from itching, it stops a recurring infection, it relives other symptoms, it re-balances your body.

Home remedy, supplement or medication?

Which option you chose depends on your body, your preference and how severe the candida overgrowth problem is. Some people will swear by home remedies like yogurt, garlic, essential oils whereas others will tell you they are all nonsense. The problem is some have a basis in fact and some really do not, so you will have to do your homework and try things out. Some people want an alternative because they do not like using drugs, some because they have had little success with them, and others because of experiencing side effects.

Talk to the experts

The opinions on candida treatments you should most trust are the experts. If you want a medicated prescribed treatment talk to your doctor, if you want to try over the counter ones talk to the pharmacist, if you want a natural treatment talk to an alternative health practitioner. Only buy from trusted brands and manufacturers, and be prepared to put some effort and commitment into the treatment process if you want long lasting success.

There are a number of anti-fungal drugs that can be used in the treatment of yeast infections today, and there are even more still in various phases of development. As the various species of candida have different resistances to different drugs, and some people respond better to one drug over another, or have negative reactions, there is always a demand for new and improved treatments. One group of drugs are called the azole drugs which includes slightly older medications like fluconazole, miconazole. But there are others in that drug group and one of the latest ones is using posaconazole to treat yeast infections. This article is about posaconazole, who it is for, potential side effects and other important information.

How does posaconazole to treat yeast infections work?

This medication is for serious yeast infections in people who have weakened immune systems and struggle to fight off the candida overgrowth. It can also be used to treat oral and throat yeast infections and may be used when other treatments have proven to be ineffective. It slows down the growth of the candida. It can be used as both a treatment of an existing infection or as a preventative treatment.

Taking posaconazole to treat yeast infections

The form this drug comes in is a liquid suspension which means you take it orally. You should take each dose with a meal. For prevention dose is usually three times a day and for treatment once or twice but you should follow your doctor’s instructions when it comes to doses and how long you are on treatment for. Make sure you complete the whole course even when the symptoms go away you need to finish the whole treatment otherwise it will probably return again. A spoon comes with the medication so that you correctly measure out the right amount, and try to take it the same time each day. If you forget to take a dose take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next one, in which case just take one dose, do not take a double dose at one time.

Make sure your doctor knows about any drug allergies you may have and how you reacted to other anti-fungal treatments if you have had any. Also be sure to tell your doctor about all medications you are taking any supplements or herbal remedies too in case this drug reacts badly to any of them. There are a number of drugs that should not be taken alongside posaconazole to treat yeast infections. You should also be sure he or she knows about any heart, kidney or liver troubles, or if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Possible side effects

Side effects vary and range in seriousness. If you have a the following, fever, dizziness, chills, headaches, feel weak, experience some swelling, diarrhea or constipation, weight loss, a rash, heartburn, vomiting, struggle to sleep, sweat more, feel itchy, have sores around the lips, feel anxious, have nosebleeds or have a persistent cough, talk to your doctor if they do not go away.

More serious side effects that you need to tell your doctor about straight away include;

Bleeding

Bruising

Fatigue

No energy

Unwilling to eat

Eyes or skin becoming yellow

Stomach pain on the right side

Symptoms that look like the flu

Shortness of breath

Not urinating as often

Urinating a dark color

Stools that are pale

Heartbeat is fast and / or irregular

Losing consciousness

Knowing whether a rash you have is a skin yeast infection rash or something else is not a simple matter. If this is the first of your yeast infection symptoms you may want to see a doctor and have an expert do a proper check up and diagnosis. It is possible to get a candida rash before any other yeast infection symptoms occur, for those that recognize it you can start treatment quickly and nip the yeast infection in the bud before it gets going.

A candida rash can affect anyone, not just women, men too can get them. Age can range as young as newborns all the way up to the elderly. Candida is a fungus that lives on nearly everyone in small numbers. We remain healthy because the good bacteria see to it that the candida stays at low amounts. If something upsets that balance a yeast infection can occur with the various yeast infection symptoms including a candida rash.

Candida rash appearance

A candida rash will be slightly raised from the skin and will be red. The edge or border of it is very clear and there may be white dots within the rash itself. Around the rash there can be pustules or lesions. In some people the rash may ooze and have a yellowy or white discharge. A candida rash can really appear anywhere on the body but is more common in places that are warm and damp because that is what the candida prefers to live in. Under breasts, in folds of skin in the overweight and obese, under arms, the diaper area are all common places. However it could still appear in other places, on your stomach your arms and so on.

Getting the correct diagnosis

A candida rash may be confused with inverse psoriasis because it has a similar appearance and occurs in the same places. If you have psoriasis in the family or you yourself actually have psoriasis in its more common form plaque psoriasis this is a possibility. It is also possible to have both skin complaints, psoriasis leaves the skin weakened and open to infections such as a yeast skin infection also called intertrigo. Have a doctor look at it, as many people incorrectly self diagnose themselves and then incorrectly self treat themselves.

You should not ignore any yeast infection symptoms as they will not go away and will just get worse. Though rare there are also potential secondary infections to worry about and complications such as a systemic yeast infection where it enters the blood stream and affects internal organs.

Treating a candida rash

You have several treatment options depending on how severe the rash is. There are either prescribed or over the counter medications you can use, or you can try natural products such as garlic, honey, tea tree oil or other alternative treatments such as homeopathy. Key to any treatment choice though is the identification of the root cause of your infection and dealing with that alongside the treatment process. Otherwise you will keep having candida problems.

A vaginal suppository is a way to get the medication or natural treatment directly to where the candida problem is. It is essentially pushing the treatment into the vaginal canal. There are several brands of medicated treatments you can purchase over the counter from a pharmacy that sell vaginal suppositories as a means of delivering the drug to treat the yeast infection, but you can also make your own if you prefer to use more natural ingredients.

Garlic is probably the easiest and most effective ingredient you can use as a vaginal suppository. Here is an easy and quick way to make a homemade garlic vaginal suppository treatment for a yeast infection.

Peel a clove of garlic. If you tend to have sensitive skin avoid making any cuts into the flesh of the garlic. If you want however you can make a small cut to allow some of the juice out. However some women find this stings and causes discomfort.

Wrap the clove into either gauze or cheesecloth and twist the end so it has a small tail for when it is time to remove.

Insert the wrapped clove up the vaginal canal. If you want you can dip the suppository in some herbal oil so that it slides in easier.

Take out and replace every 3 to 5 hours and continue when you can for up to five days.

An oral suspension is one of the several forms yeast infection medications come on. The forms vary according to what type of yeast infection you have, i.e where it is, and also how severe your problem is. For example creams are more suitable for external topical application on the skin, pills are for intestinal candida or more severe infections that need a systemic approach, and an oral suspension is for Thrush or oral yeast infections.

There are a few forms of medication for oral yeast infections, lozenges, drop, tablets and oral suspensions. For a stronger treatment a doctor can prescribe this and to use it the sufferer takes the solution into the mouth, swishes it around for a while, so the medication reaches the areas of infection, then swallows it. Active ingredients vary but common drugs used in oral suspensions include amphotericin B, miconazole and nystatin. As when taking any medication it is important to complete the full course, even if symptoms go sooner, as there may still be some amounts of fungus there that will cause another infection if not dealt with.

There are various forms of yeast infection treatments, sometimes you can choose according to your preference, and sometimes it depends on where your yeast infection is and how serious it is. Usually creams are used for skin and external yeast infections, suspensions and lozenges for oral yeast infections, vaginal suppositories for vagina yeast infections. Many sufferers that choose to use medicated treatment would prefer to use a pill because of the convenience, it is quick, easy, no mess, and no worries about forgetting to take your treatment.

But usually the pill form is for either internal yeast or severe yeast infections. There have been recent developments in over the counter brands offering a one dose pill to treat vaginal yeast infections but for a more severe infection a pill has to be prescribed by a doctor. It is important to understand however that pregnant women should not take a pill to treat a vaginal yeast infection as there is the potential result of harming the baby. A doctor tends to offer a pill as a last resort step though, when other options, creams or over the counter brands, have failed or they have a strain resistant to those drugs.

Conventional medicine uses anti-fungal drugs to treat yeast infection, which come in various forms, oral, topical, systemic and so on. You can use over the counter treatments or you may need something stronger prescribed by a doctor. But this is not the only treatment option you have. There are homeopathic options that are also effective against yeast infection if you find the right combination that works for you.

There are many different herbs and supplements that can treat a yeast infection. Just as you should not diagnose and treat yourself with drugs without talking to a doctor, you should also consult with an expert in homeopathic treatments if you decide you want a more natural approach to treating your condition.

Usually whatever herbs or regime the expert suggests (an individual treatment is created for each patient) you begin slowly and build up gradually. Often there is something called die-off, a worsening of symptoms caused by the increase in toxins caused by dieing candida. This usually only lasts a few days. After two to four weeks you should see results.

There are many things you can do at home to help fight a yeast infection, whether you are using a conventional treatment (medication) or herbal (natural). There are home remedies that can help soothe your symptoms, foods to avoid and foods to eat more of, and there are drinks you drink more of. Here are three suggestions for drinks that will help with your yeast infection;

Water!! How easy is this one! Try to avoid chlorinated water or water with fluoride added. Drinking a lot of water each day will help flush out your system and get rid of toxins the candida releases.

Cranberry Juice. Cranberry juice is great for your overall health as well as for candida overgrowth. Drink at least 8 ounces of unsweetened juice a day (make sure it is no added sugar as the sugar is a food source for the candida).

Here is a recipe for a herbal tea that can help the battle against candida. Drink it three times a day at least half hour before eating a meal. The tea can be bitter so try adding a little cranberry juice to help it go down.Ingredients

2 parts raspberry leaf

2 parts sage

2 parts mullein

¼ part goldenseal rootAdd 4 to 6 tablespoon to a quart of cold water and simmer over a low heat, covering the pot. When simmering remove from heat and allow to steep for twenty minutes then strain.

Yeast infection medications come in several forms to better reach the different forms a yeast infection can occur in. For vaginal yeast infections there are several options, creams, ointments, a pill, and a vaginal suppository. Common active drugs in vaginal suppositories are terconazole, nystatin, clotrimazole and miconazole. Vaginal suppositories are especially good for women who have unusual vaginal discharge with their yeast infection.

A vaginal suppository is medication that the sufferer inserts into her vagina. Depending on the brand depends on exactly what the suppository looks like. Some are tablet or capsule shaped that you insert and the medication dissolves into the vagina. Some have applicators that are pre-filled or that you fill with cream, that you then insert and squirt up the vagina.

If choosing to use vaginal suppositories to treat your yeast infection remember that there can be some leaking. It is a good idea to wear a sanitary pad to protect your underwear and it is not particularly a suitable choice if you are always active unless you do it at night in bed.

Chronic yeast infection may also be called recurring yeast infection and means you get a yeast infection four or more times a year. So if you get it three times a year you are not classed as having chronic yeast infections even though you get it more than once. If you have chronic yeast infection you really need to see a doctor if you have not already. Chronic yeast infections occur for a number of reasons, not using treatments correctly, a candida that has a resistance to treatment, not dealing with the root cause, not using strong enough treatment.

By talking with your doctor you can identify why you are getting 4 or more yeast infections a year and try to take steps to deal with it. That may mean a stronger prescription, a change in diet and clothing, a change in other medication, and so on. If you are more prone to yeast infections because of a weakened immune system caused by an illness like HIV or by a treatment like chemotherapy your doctor may advice you try taking prophylactic treatment, meaning taking anti-fungal medication regularly as a preventative measure.

There is not a simple answer to this question, asked by many who want the strongest available treatment thinking it will have more chance of working on getting rid of their yeast infection. First of all there are natural anti-fungal treatments and there are anti-fungal drug medications. Also it is not necessarily the strongest candida anti-fungal treatment that will work for you, different people respond to different treatments, what may work for you may not work for another person, for a variety of reasons. So this article will look at the strongest candida anti-fungal natural remedy, and will give a brief outline of the common medicated treatments used.

Garlic – the strongest candida anti-fungal natural remedy

When using garlic it should be fresh and it is best to start slowly, as being the strongest candida anti-fungal natural remedy makes it pretty potent and people need to build up when using it. A dose that is too high may cause vomiting. There are several ways you can use garlic as a means to treat yeast infections.

Eat 1 clove three times a day for a mild infection increasing to 9 bulbs if it is severe.

Juice the garlic with tomato juice or carrot juice or even honey to make it easier to take.

Make a garlic tincture by putting a clove in 95% alcohol.

Swallow half a clove like a pill.

For skin and ear infections boil it.

Wrap it in a gauze and insert it into the vagina.

Mash it up and use it like a cream.

The problem with garlic is the odor, it can put people off using it as a remedy despite its effectiveness. The compound that makes garlic the strongest candida anti-fungal remedy is Allicin which occurs when raw garlic is cut or damaged. Cooking destroys Allicin which is why you need to deal with raw garlic not cooked. Ways to minimize the garlic smell is by swallowing rather than chewing, sometimes eating parsley after helps too. And chose times where you will not be socializing or talking to other people afterward. Studies done on garlic’s anti-fungal properties have found it to be as effective as the drug Nystatin. Also due to its various properties and compounds Candida is unlikely to become resistant to it.

The alternative to raw garlic is taking garlic or Allicin supplements. The problem is the Allicin is what makes the smell, and it is thing that fights the fungus. Some garlic supplements are questionable in their effectiveness because if they claim to be odorless then it may be that there are reduced amounts or even no allicin in them, which makes them pointless as a candida treatment.

Strongest candida anti-fungal drugs

There are several types of anti-fungal drugs, some you can over the counter and are not as strong, some prescribed by a doctor which are stronger, then some are administered to patients with candidiasis in hospital via IV. Most kill the fungus cells by damaging the cell walls. Drugs are not just about strength though, they are also about your medical history, how severe your yeast infection is, how you react to certain drugs. The most commonly used ones are:

Nystatin – One of the first anti-fungal drugs developed to treat yeast infections and most commonly used for intestinal overgrowth. Safe as not much of it is absorbed by the intestinal tract and side effects are mild. Comes in various forms and is often the first choice for doctors when treating their patients with mild to moderate candida overgrowth problems. Some species of candida are becoming resistant to it though.

Amphotericin B – Similar to nystatin and often used for hospitalized patients via IV, but can be toxic to some. However it can come in other forms. Is used if nystatin is not successful.

Diflucan (fluconazole) – Is a systemic anti-fungal drug and is absorbed by the intestines. Was first developed and used in the 1980s and is used when nystatin and amphotericin B fails. Has few side effects and considering it is a systemic drug has few side effects.

Sporanox (itraconazole) – One of the newest azole drugs, used first in the 1990s, similar to flucaonazole but has more success against certain species of candida that is resistant to fluconazole.

Nizoral (ketoconazole) – The first azole drug to be developed but has the potential of causing liver damage so is only used if patients have not responded to any other treatment.

Lamisil (Terbinafine HCL) – The latest anti-fungal drug being used routinely. It is for systemic infections and is used when a candida overgrowth proves resistant to other drugs. It is becoming increasingly popular amongst doctors and may even replace fluconazole as the go to drug. However it has been linked to liver damage and congestive heart failure.

Yeast infections are extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable, and often all you want to do is find a yeast infection pill to take and get rid of those annoying symptoms, such as itching, swelling, burning, sensitivity and discharge. Other forms of treatment such as yeast infection suppositories or yeast infection creams require a commitment, and can be messy. Taking a yeast infection pill treatment requires no need to remember doses, timings or cleaning up any leakages. But a yeast infection pill is not always the right treatment for everyone.

Over the counter yeast infection pill

Until recently, if you used over the counter anti-fungal medications you tended to get them in two forms, either as a suppository or as a cream. Today there many different brands that offer yeast infection treatment, and each brand has many different combinations of treatment, some suppositories are hard bullet shaped capsules to insert, some are creams, some are day treatments, some or night, some come with a cream too to relive symptoms, some have wipes, and so on. Each brand also often differs in the active ingredient it uses, so while one brand may be effective for some, another that uses a different anti-fungal drug as its key active ingredient may be better for others.

But there was not a yeast infection pill, this was something only your doctor could prescribe. However the brand Canesten now offers a choice of a pill that comes with a cream for the symptoms.

Prescription yeast infection pill

Fluconazole (Diflucan) is a prescription yeast infection pill. Fluconazole is the generic name for the drug, Diflucan is one of the brand names it appears under. About 80% of people that take this yeast infection pill respond to the treatment, and it takes 3 days for symptoms to go. There are some things to consider however about this method of treatment.

First of all a yeast infection pill is a systemic method of treatment – meaning it treats the whole body as apposed to a topical methods like a cream that treats one area. As a systemic treatment, a prescribed yeast infection pill can lead to side effects that include headaches and nausea. In rare cases, these side effects can be serious.

Also if you are on other medications you need to talk to your doctor since there can be reactions and there are drugs it is not compatible with such as some antibiotics, some antidepressants, heart medicines and seizure medication. Pregnant women should certainly not use a yeast infection pill to treat a yeast infection as it can cause harm to the unborn baby.

Taking a yeast infection pill

Dose is usually just one pill, and results should be noticeable after 3 days. If symptoms have not cleared up after 7 days you need to see your doctor again, also see them if you have unwanted side effects that are difficult to deal with. While waiting for the yeast infection pill to take effect soak in a cool bath to relive symptoms or try some natural remedies such as probiotic yogurt, raw garlic, tea tree oil. Some sufferers may require a second pill 72 hours after the first, it depends on severity and other health issues.

The problem with a fluconazole yeast infection pill
There is a growing issue of resistance to treatment amongst yeast infection sufferers. Some candida species are resistant to fluconazole and even the common cause of yeast infection, candida albicans is developing a resistance as it is exposed more and more to the treatment. Therefore more often than not, yeast infection pill treatments are saved for more serious cases of Candidiasis, for those who may have recurring problems, or for those who have weakened immune systems and in whom an infection if it becomes blood-borne can become a serious illness and even fatal.

Recurring yeast infections are also referred to as chronic yeast infections or persistent yeast infections. This means you get a yeast infection four more more times a year. Symptoms are the same as for regular yeast infections, itching, redness, swelling, white discharge, irritation, pain during sex or when urinating, but recurring yeast infection causes likely involve a problem with ineffective treatment, the root of the problem not being dealt with, or even possibly an inaccurate diagnosis.

If you believe you have this problem but do not know what the recurring yeast infection causes are, your first thing to do is visit your doctor. They can take a swab and send it for testing to confirm whether it is a yeast infection you have or something else that has been going untreated, because you have just been throwing over the counter yeast infection treatments at it. If for example you actually have bacterial vaginosis, anti-fungal treatments will be totally ineffective, and may even aggravate the problem.

Stronger medication

Your doctor may find that your recurring yeast infection causes are that over the counter medications are not strong enough for you, and prescribe you a stronger anti-fungal drug, either topical in the form for example of a cream, or as a pill. It may also be a problem of resistance. The fungus that causes the yeast infection is a strain of the Candida family, most commonly Candida Albicans. Because women are over using over the counter medication, or are not finishing the course correctly, or are completely mis-diagnosing themselves, they may be allowing the fungus to develop a resistance to this form of treatment. So each time they use it is less and less effective, meaning there is fungus still left there ready to flare up into another infection in the not too distant future.

Strain of Candida

Though the most common strain of Candida that leads to yeast infections is Albicans, there are other strains that are becoming more common such as Candida Glabrata. The problem with this is that Glabrata is far more resistant to many treatments, particularly the group of anti-fungal drugs known as the azoles. This is another reason why you need your doctor to take a swab and culture to check to see what strain is causing your infection. One of the recurring yeast infection causes is that you have a less common strain that will only respond to certain drugs.

Uncontrolled Diabetes

This is the third of the recurring yeast infection causes here. Uncontrolled diabetes means high blood sugar levels, which the yeast feeds on. In fact it is quite possible that when you go to your doctor and complain of recurring yeast infections, he or she may test your blood sugar levels to check you for diabetes, as often this one of the first clues that the patient has undiagnosed diabetes.

Certain hygiene practices

Some women still insist on douching despite everything around them, doctors, doctors on TV, articles, that tell them not to. Douching upsets the balance of the vagina. If you keep douching, you keep killing the good bacteria that control the fungus, and so you will keep getting yeast infections. Use of perfumed products and chemicals, harsh detergents can also cause irritation. If you you just treat the yeast infection, but carry on using the same laundry softener that is causing the problem, you will keep getting them.

HIV/AIDS and other immunocompromised patients

One of the recurring yeast infection causes is a permanently weakened immune system that cannot fight off the fungus or keep it controlled and in small numbers. So recurring yeast infections are often a problem for these patients. Plus they are often receiving treatments such as prolonged antibiotics, or chemotherapy or steroids, that cause imbalance and lead to yeast infections. Sometimes these patients are put on preventative treatments as a systemic infection, where it enters the bloodstream, can occur and this can be fatal.

Prolonged courses of antibiotics

The top cause of yeast infections and for recurring yeast infection causes. Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria. Some are able to target specific ‘bad’ bacteria, but many are not so they kill all bacteria, good and bad. Without the good bacteria controlling the growth of the Candida, it multiplies and yeast infections occur.

Birth Control Pills

Hormonal imbalance is often a trigger for a yeast infection and birth control pills introduce more hormones into the body.

A diet high in sugar

One of the recurring yeast infection causes that is relatively easy to change. The yeast feeds on sugar, so a diet that is high in it keep it coming back for more.

A female yeast infection is also known as Candida vulvovaginitis and is one of the most common gynecologic complaints women go to their doctor with. It is caused by the overgrowth of a fungus called Candida Albicans and affects three quarters of women who are able to reproduce. It is very important that if you notice something is wrong and you are experiencing symptoms, you get a proper diagnosis. This way you avoid incorrect self diagnosis, incorrect treatments, and developing a recurring yeast infection. Half of women will have had at least 1 yeast infection by the age of 25. But there are other infections that have the same symptoms or are common as well like bacterial vaginosis.

Five key triggers of a female yeast infection

Pregnancy – Hormonal changes make a yeast infection more likely, particularly in the third trimester. See a doctor for treatment advice rather than self-treating with anything including yeast infection creams, as it could be dangerous for the baby.

Antibiotics – Taking antibiotics frequently or on prolonged courses is the top cause of all yeast infections as they can destroy both the good and bad bacteria in your body. The good bacteria are part of the body’s system of controlling the fungus so without them, there is an overgrowth and an infection.

Weakened or suppressed immune system – HIV patients, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, those on corticosteroid medication for example are all more likely to get a yeast infection.

Birth control pill – Messes with the body’s natural hormonal balance, yeast likes estrogen, so pills that are high in it can be a trigger.

Contraceptive devices – Intrauterine devices, vaginal sponges and diaphragms can cause irritation in the lining of the vagina which can lead to a yeast infection.

Symptoms of a Yeast Infection
Symptoms that send women out buying yeast infection creams without first getting a proper diagnosis include:

Itching

Burning

Inflammation

Redness

Irritation

White unusual discharge

Discomfort during sex

Treatment of Yeast Infections
Once you are sure it is a yeast infection there are several treatment options, pills, suppositories, natural remedies, yeast infection creams. If you treat the infection reasonably quickly over the counter anti-fungal yeast infection creams will be effective. The four key anti-fungal drugs used in these yeast infection creams are:

Butoconazole

Clotrimazole

Miconazole

Tioconazole

Miconazole
Brands that use Miconazole vaginal yeast infection creams are, Femizole-M, Monistat 3, Monistat 7 and Monistat. Miconazole is an anti-fungal that is used as a vaginal cream or suppository. As with all yeast infection creams it is made to treat the infection as well as offer relief for the itching and burning symptoms. It comes in 1 day(prescription only), 3 day and 7 day courses. Miconazole is one of the yeast infection creams that can be used in as well as around the vagina. If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember and do not use with the blooding thinning drug, Warfarin. It will increase the thinning of blood and may increase bruising and cause bleeding. Miconazole weakens barrier contraceptive devices to prevent pregnancy so abstaining from sex to avoid pregnancy is the best course to take. Wear a pad to protect your underwear, not a tampon, as that will soak up the cream.

Tioconazole
Tioconazole is the generic name for the brand Vagistat-1 and is another of the yeast infection creams used to treat monilia (candida) infections of the vagina. Tioconzaole should only be used in the vagina. At bedtime insert the applicator that has the cream in it, into the vagina and push the plunger to release it. This is a one dose treatment though it does still take up to 7 days for the infection to completely clear up.

Butoconazole
Butoconazole is the generic name for the brand names Femstat, Gynazole 1 and Myselex 3. Butoconzaole vaginal yeast infection creams are anti-fungal agents that relieve the symptoms of yeast infections. They are available in 1-day or 3-day courses.

Clotrimzaole
Clotrimzaole is the generic name for the brand names Gyne-Lotrimin, Bynix, Mycelex-7, Myselex-G and Trivagizole. These yeast infection creams are all are anti-fungal agents that treat the symptoms of yeast infections. If symptoms do not improve after 3 days talk to your doctor and do not use for more than 7 days.

A yeast infection comes in various forms and each form has its own symptoms, however there are some symptoms that are common through most of the forms, and yeast infection burning is one of them. Women with vaginal yeast infections can experience a burning feeling when urinating or when having sex, men may have a similar yeast infection burning if they have a male yeast infection. Oral yeast infection comes with a burning symptom also.

A yeast infection can happen in men and women in the old and the young. It is the result of an overgrowth of existing micro-organisms that live in and on your body, not something you picked up off someone else. These organisms are a fungus called Candida, and the most common strain of Candida that causes the most yeast infections is Candida Albicans.

Ways to relieve yeast infection burning

While you are learning the root cause of your infection, dealing with that and treating your infection, you may still need something that offers relief for that yeast infection burning, if your treatment is not providing it. A few natural and conventional options are:

Yogurt cubes – Freeze some probiotic plain yogurt in an ice cube tray or make them into Popsicle shapes. Then use them on the infected are to provide instant and welcome relief from the yeast infection burning.

Yogurt – you do not have to freeze the plain probiotic yogurt to get its soothing relief, use it like a lotion, messy but effective.

Aloe Vera gel – Commonly used for the relief of sunburns and burns and works just as well on yeast infection burning. Apply as needed on the infection. (Obviously not for an oral yeast infections). Use an aloe vera gel that is 99% pure and has very few other ingredients otherwise these may be irritating causing symptoms to worsen.

Chickweed ointment – Usually used for anti-itching but also as effective as an anti yeast infection burning ointment. Use with your actual treatment whenever you need to.

Air out – Wherever the infection is, if possible let it get some air every day and keep it dry. Sitting in front of a fan or air conditioner helps! Try not to sit for long periods of time.

Over the counter medications – if you are using an over the counter treatment in all likelihood included with the treatment is a cream (if the treatment itself isn’t a cream). This is for the relief if itching and yeast infection burning and other symptoms.

Garlic – peel some raw cloves, and mash them up into a paste that you can then use like a cream.

Is it yeast infection burning or a urinary tract infection?

If the burning when you urinate comes from inside as it passes down the tube this is probably a urinary tract infection rather than a yeast infection. However if the burning is when the urine is passing and is as a result of touching the irritated and sensitive skin of the vulva, then this is more likely to be a yeast infection.

Nystan oral suspension has the active ingredient nystatin, an anti-fungal drug used in the treatment of yeast and fungi infections. There are generic medicines of the same nature (i.e. No brand name). As with other anti-fungal drugs nystatin kills yeast by interfering with the yeast cell membranes. When the drug binds with an essential part of the membrane, ergosterol, it causes pores or small holes to appear. This leads to things getting into the cell that can kill it and contents leaking out that it needs. So the cells die and the infection is treated.

What is Nystan oral suspension used for?

When a person has an oral yeast infection, a throat yeast infection or an intestinal yeast infection it is possible that Nystan oral suspension will be used as treatment. All of these infections are usually caused by the overgrowth of the fungi Candida Albicans. Nystatin does not absorb into the blood stream which means it is a good choice when wanting to treat an infection directly at the place it shows. After a person has eaten they use the suspension, holding it in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing.

Nystan oral suspension can also be used for preventative reasons as well as treatment. It can be used for example with babies to prevent Thrush, if they are born to a mother with a Vaginal yeast infection.

Information about Nystan oral suspension

As the active ingredient is nystatin which does not absorb into the bloodstream, Nystan oral suspension should not be used to treat systemic yeast infection.

Do not dilute the medicine.

Part of the ingredients are certain sugars and so for those who cannot have those sugars it is not suitable.

Finish the prescribed course even if symptoms clear up sooner.

Take at regular intervals.

Do not use if allergic to any ingredients.

Since Nystan oral suspension is not absorbed into the blood stream it is safe for pregnant women to use.

For the same reason it is also safe for breastfeeding mothers to use. In both cases a doctor should be consulted first still.

There are no negative reactions with other drugs since Nystan oral suspension is not absorbed into the blood.

Side effects of Nystan oral suspension

Irritation of the mouth

Vomiting

Rash

Nausea

Diarrhea

There may be other side effects so read the information with the medication carefully. Some may suffer no side effects some may suffer a few. Different people react differently to different medications. If you suffer severe reactions or reactions do not go away contact your pharmacist or doctor straight away.

Yeast Infections are also known as Thrush, Candidiasis or Moniliasis. They are caused by the overgrowth of a Candida fungi that live normally in your body at low numbers. The main species from the Candida fungi group that are the cause of yeast infections is Candida Albicans. This micro organism lives in our intestines, our vaginae, our skin, mouth and so on and when kept at low numbers by the good bacteria and our immune system, they are harmless. Triggers can cause an overgrowth however, or the good bacteria can be killed, or your immune system can be compromised, all of which means a yeast infection can occur.

Symptoms vary depending on what form of yeast infection you have and how severe it is. They include itching, redness, swelling, a discharge if it is a vaginal infection, white spots, lesions and pain eating and drinking if it is Thrush or a throat yeast infection.

There are several ways to treat a yeast infection, several anti-fungal drugs that come in several forms. This article is focusing on yeast infection oral medication which is treatment prescribed by a doctor for the most part.

Vaginal yeast infection oral medication

If using a yeast infection oral medication for a vaginal yeast infection the most common anti-fungal drugs the doctor may prescribe are either fluconazole(Diflucan) nystatin or amphotericin B. Out of those three the most common one by far used is fluconazole however Candida Albicans infections are becoming more resistant to fluconazole and so higher dosing is needed.

Usually a vaginal yeast infection is treated with topical medications rather than yeast infection oral medication. These topical treatments are usually over the counter rather then prescribed by a doctor. Doctors tens to save yeast infection oral medication for those with systemic infections (in the blood) but there are exceptions. If your infection is caused by Candida glabrata rather than Albicans, this is more resistant to anti-fungal drugs than other candida strains, and so yeast infection oral medication may be more likely to be used.

Active ingredients

Remember that there are so many choices in brands of yeast infection oral medication because each one has different active ingredients. Some patients respond well to one brand whereas other respond better to another. In yeast infection oral medication likely active ingredients to look for are clotrimazole, nystatin, miconazole, fluconazole and terconazole. If you use one medication with one active ingredient and it is not effective, try a treatment that has a different active ingredient or a different combination.

Thrush yeast infection oral medication

Suspensions of an anti-fungal medication can be used for Thrush (mouth yeast infection) and throat yeast infection where the liquid is swished and then swallowed. Lozenges are another yeast infection oral medication which patients allows to dissolve in the mouth. These methods allow the medication to stay in the area of the infection. Nystatin (Nystan oral suspension), miconazole (Daktarin oral gel) or amphotericin (Fungilin lozenges) are examples of yeast infection oral medication. If you need more information about any of these three yeast infection oral medication look for the corresponding articles also on this site.
