Yeast infections are usually linked to women but men can get them too. However whilst most women are more aware of the symptoms to look for, men usually have no clue about Candida yeast infections which can mean their infection goes undiagnosed, untreated or at best mistreated.

This article will give you some information about yeast infections in men, some symptoms and some ways you can treat it.

Type 1 – Oral Yeast Infection

Getting the infection in the mouth can be very painful but is sometimes mistaken for sore throat problems. If you are misdiagnosed and the prescriptions are not working it may be that you have a mouth yeast infection. Symptoms are:
Very bad breath, spots around the lips and areas close to them that are red, unusual patches on gums, the roof of the mouth and the tongue, difficulty eating due to pain and the sore throat.

Type 2 – Skin Yeast Infections

This can sometimes be the hardest type of yeast infection to identify as there are so many skin conditions, eczema, poison ivy, even just a heat rash. Visit your doctor to get a professional diagnosis and if their suggested treatment isn’t working make sure you keep revisiting until a correct diagnosis is made. Symptoms are:

Acne getting worse in one area, a rash, headaches, aching and painful joints, depression and lethargy.

Type 3 – Penile Yeast Infection

Probably the more common area that men will get a yeast infection in. Using the symptoms outlined below you may be able to self diagnose but if unsure visit your doctor. Symptoms are:
Pain when having sex and when urinating, a white thick discharge from the tip of the penis, an unpleasant odor, itching, spots or a rash along the shaft, the head becoming red and swollen, the skin being flaky and dry.

Treatments

Once you know whether you have a yeast infection you have several treatment options available to you. There are a lot of natural remedies that are effective and can help you. Most are easy to get and use. They include yogurt, tea tree oil and garlic. You also need to make some lifestyle changes in order to treat the root cause of the infection. This means changes in your eating habits, possibly your clothing and making sure you are well rested and healthy in general.
There are over the counter treatments you can choose from and your doctor may prescribe anti fungal creams but without the lifestyle changes you may find the yeast infection becomes recurring as they treat the symptoms not the cause.

Oral yeast infection is also commonly known as Thrush and infects the mucous membranes of the throat and mouth. Candida Albicans is the yeast that causes it and this micro organism lives on many of us without doing harm and kept under control by good bacteria in our bodies. When an imbalance happens the Candida can over grow and this leads to a yeast infection.

This imbalance can happen for several reasons;
•	the immune system is weakened from an illness, drugs or disease. For example HIV or cancer treatments like chemotherapy.
•	diabetes becasue of the high blood sugar level, the yeast feeds and grows on sugar.
•	Prolonged use of antibitocs which as well as killing bad bacteria also killed the good that were keeping the yeast in check. This includes antibacterial mouthwash.
•	steroids
•	stress – it is important to relax, to get the proper amount of sleep and to have a balance home and work lifestyle.
•	poor diet – too many carbs, sugars, yeast products, refined and processed foods all contribute to the yeast’s ability to multiply and spread.
•	dentures – mucous membranes can get damaged from using dentures which gets the fungus growing.

Symptoms of Thrush are the same in men and women. Raised spots on the tongue and mouth that are white, cream or yellow, pain and hard time swallowing, burning feeling, crusts that if removed have bleeding lesions beneath and bad breath. There are other symptoms and when in doubt always talk to your doctor.

Treatment is also the same for both genders. There are anti-fungal drugs that come as pastilles to suck or mouth wash type treatments. If the infection is not cleared up using these methods or the infection is spreading there are other treatments your doctor may decide upon and other anti-fungal drugs including injections. It is important to know that Candida can learn to resist treatments if the same one is constantly used ineffectively over time. Also each time the infection recurss it canbecome stronger and more difficult to effectively treat.

For that and other reasons some turn to natural methods of treatment because they come with no side effects, they are simple, cheap and drug free. Whichever route you decide upon talk to your doctor first.

When discussing yeast infections the focus tends to go to women as the most common type of yeast infection is vaginal. This is because the micro organism that causes an infection called Candida Albicans that lives naturally on our bodies, in particular likes to live in the female genitalia for the warm and moist conditions. However this is misleading as in fact anyone can get a yeast infection, men, women and children. Sadly male yeast infections are probably one of the most ignored and mistreated male illnesses today.

As stated the fungus Candida Albicans loves warm and damp environments and men have areas that provide that environment too. Men are likely to become infected when they have unprotected sex with a female partner who has a yeast infection. This is why it is important to use a condom as unless you both do something you will keep passing the yeast spores back and forth between you.

Symptoms in a man are dry, cracked and flaky skin of the penis, and inflamation especially when the penis is erect. Men can also experience the well known itching and discharge symptoms that women experience. Men find that they suddenly have a sweet tooth, craving sweets and sugary foods, as well as craving carbs and starchy foods like chips and pasta. This is because the fungus feeds on sugar and so these foods will help it grow.

Male yeast infection has no age limits and can affect the young to the mature man. An imbalance can happen between the fungus and other bacteria in the body particularly in the digestive system, which allows the fungus to multiply and develop through the body to different parts.

Reasons for male yeast infections include a weak immune system from illnessses like HIV, over use of antibiotics, sexual contact with an infected partner, wheat and corn foods, barley, peanuts and alcohol particularly beer because of the yeast it contains. As soon as a man thinks he has a yeast infection he needs to take action and visit his doctor as it will not go away by ignoring it, and in fact symptoms and health concerns can become more serious.

The fungi that leads to a yeast infection is actually already on the body but is usually kept under control. If its environment changes to being more moist and warm, it grows. Usually our body is able to keep the fungi from over growing through our immune system and good bacteria we have.

Yeast infections are not limited to just women; men and children can also get them. The most common misconception is that a yeast infection is a female problem as the most common form is vaginal, but men can get it on the penis and babies can get Thrush (a mouth yeast infection).Yeast infections form wherever there is a warm, dark, damp environment to thrive in.

Why you might get a yeast infection

First of all for babies and toddlers remember that since the Candida (the fungus) loves the warm and moist areas, changing diapers regularly is important as is cleaning between baby folds of skin. If you need to know what to look for, it is white and lumpy and smells of yeast. Clean and especially dry your baby properly particularly during hot weather. For women, yeast infection of the vagina is more common because of the composition of the genital area, the folds etc are more prone to staying dark, warm and damp. Men may get it because of poor hygeine routines or getting it from their infected sexual partner.

Symptoms of a yeast infection

Symptoms really depend on where it is happening. If it is vaginal there can be itching, burning, and thick or thin white discharge. Oral yeast infection (Thrush) usually comes with patches that are thick and white and underneath the patches it is red and swollen. This type is not itchy like other manifestations but is sore and if the white crust is removed it bleeds. This makes it difficult to drink or eat so make sure if it is a baby that you hydrate him or her regularly.

Conclusion

In order to quickly treat or avoid yeast infections it is important to know why they occur and to be aware of the symptoms. This is because yeast infections really need to be treated as fast as possible so that other complications do not arise and because treatments are more effective on a new infection rather than a long term untreated one.

Most people consider yeast infections to be a female problem but in fact they can occur in children and in men too. However most men do not recognize what they have and ignore the male yeast symptoms and it then goes undiagnosed and untreated. Though women tend to recognize reasonably quickly that something is wrong in that area, men have no real idea what a yeast infection is. Unfortunately this means larger problems with the health later on. It is actually harder to recognize yeast infections in men than in women.

There are several places the yeast infection can happen; penis, mouth, underarms, intestines and skin. Age is not a factor, you can not be too young or too old to get it.
Here are some male yeast symptoms and signs men can look for to see if they have a yeast infection.
•	Pain during sex, burning when urinating, rash or red area on the scrotum and or penis, itching.
•	White coat on the tongue, dizziness, digestive problems, short term memory problems, sweet tooth, irregular pulse.

There are several ways men can get a yeast infection. One is if their sexual partner has it. If the wife of girlfriend has a yeast infection it can be passed on through intercourse. Also if you are a big beer drinker this puts you more at risk. Beer has yeast in it and that yeast feeds the yeast of the infection kind.

Antibiotics are another cause. Men and women have good bacteria in them that are part of what keeps the fungus under control and stops it overgrowing and becoming a yeast infection. When we have used antibiotics these good bacteria get killed along with the bad ones and so the fungus can grow unchallenged.
If you are a guy who is suffering from any symptoms mentioned do not pretend it isn’t happening. Not treating it for a long time can cause other health problems and can make the symptoms get worse.

It is not commonly realized that though yeast infections do affect women they can also affect men. It can be embarrassing for both genders as well as painful and annoying. A male yeast infection can occur in the usual places which are the genitals and the mouth but also just on small areas of the skin. There are many natural remedies out there that are effective for treating symptoms as well as the infection itself but perhaps one of the cheapest, easiest and most effective is plain old yogurt!

Both men and women have used this remedy and have found that the yogurt has a wonderful soothing action when applied to the infected area. It cools down the burning sensation and calms the itching symptom. It reduces the pain and discomfort and the good bacteria in it fights the male yeast infection itself. This means there is no need for antibiotics, which are bad for yeast infections anyway as they lower your body’s ability to fight the yeast infection because they kill all bacteria, good and bad.

First of all make sure it is natural, plain yogurt, no added fruit and especially no added sugar, as sugar is a food for the yeast infection helping it grow. It is a good idea to put the yogurt on a small section of skin before using it on the infection itself just in case you are one of the few that have poor reactions to such methods. This is a good idea for any treatment you may decide to try for yeast infections or indeed any home remedy. It is important to check first that you do not have an allergy to the product.

It is also advisable to discuss your symptoms with your doctor as they may have suggestions or advice about home remedies for male yeast infections which may influence which ones you use if any. To use the yogurt you can either eat it daily or you can apply it directly to the infected area using some cotton pads or something that is hygienic. You can of course do both!

Yeast infections occur in everyone: men, women even infants. It happens in men when Candida Albicans fungus grows and spreads anywhere on the body including the penis. When at a temperature that is room temperature the fungus spores stay in a dormant phase. But given the right conditions, a change in environment like hotter, more humid weather these spores increase and become a yeast infection. Other causes of their growth include a change in the body caused by antibiotics, even a raise in body temperature during sex.

One option when you have a yeast infection is to consult your doctor or consider over the counter treatments. But there are circumstances where the yeast infection comes back and sufferers have to relive the pain and irritation of a yeast infection every few months, because not all the spores are being killed.

Doctors usually advice patients to only use the prescribed treatments for two to three days i.e. when the symptoms are gone. This is because of the chemicals that are in them. If used for longer these chemicals could cause other problems to the skin, particularly in a sensitive area like the genitals. The problem with this is that the spores are not all killed in this time. The fully grown Candida Albicans are taken care of but quite often spores that have not matured will remain in the infected area. When the environment becomes hospitable again they thrive again and so the yeast infection cycle continues.

A large number of people turn to natural treatments because of this. In fact perhaps the best male yeast treatment is a home one. Natural remedies have been used successfully without side effects for hundreds of years. Do a search online and you will find many suggestions for home cures though make sure you are careful after all you are applying it to your penis! Suggestions that do work are garlic, carrots, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil and pro biotic yogurts.

To summaries the ideal way to treat male yeast infections is to use home natural remedies. Unlike chemically created pharmaceuticals they have no side effects and are more successful at killing all the spores therefore stopping the infection from reoccurring.

Generally speaking, we can’t say that there’s a specific male yeast treatment, as bacteria usually responds to the same kind of treatment as in females.

However as with pharmaceuticals and prescribed drugs different remedies work with different effectiveness on different people. The following suggestions worked for me, so I would advise you to give them a go. Try using all three methods to increase your chances of becoming yeast free!

Yogurt is a great effective natural way to treat yeast infections. Eating fairly large amounts can reduce the risk of getting yeast infections but don’t make yourself sick! It almost acts like an antibiotic though it isn’t. Do make sure that you use a natural sugar free, fruit free yoghurt. (Sugar feeds the yeast, you do not want to encourage it to grow). As well as eating it you can also use it as an ointment. Use it directly from the fridge and apply the yogurt to some cotton swabs or tampons then apply the tampons to the infection. The wonderful coolness soothes the itching and reduces any swelling thus helping to ease the pain. The bacteria in the yogurt (probiotic) works against the yeast infection fighting the fungus. Do this twice a day, morning and night and you will notice its effects straight away. You may need to use additional treatments alongside this.

Another method to combat yeast infections yourself is to mix together water and apple cider vinegar and drink it. Or blended with garlic and applied directly on the infection. This again eases the rash and burning.

Finally try a boric acid suppository. This is anti-fungal and an antiseptic. As well as giving relief to the symptoms of burning and itching it kills the actual bacteria that cause yeast infections. You can buy them from health stores or pharmacies. If you cannot find it, make your own by mixing boric acid powder with water and apply it to the infected area. While at the health store look for acidophilus and black walnut as these too are natural treatments for yeast infections.

Generally, when it comes to yeast infections men tend to consider themselves protected thinking of this as a female specific disease; however, that’s not always the case so they should be much more careful about this disease.

Most people do not realize that yeast infections can affect anyone, women, children and yes even men. As with vaginal yeast infections there is irritation and itchiness in the genital area. Other common symptoms include rashes, burning, peeling, and soreness though there are more. The cause of yeast infections in men is the same as that in women; an increased amount of candida. When the body becomes out of balance the candida can multiply leading to a yeast infection. It is a very uncomfortable disease but there are options out there – both pharmaceutical and natural male yeast infection treatment exist.

An important step you need to take should you have an infection or wish to avoid it, is to stop what you are eating and take a good look at your diet. There are certain types of foods that in fact help yeast to grow, so you need to minimize these or cut them out completely. These foods are alcohol so beer etc, sugars, and foods containing yeast. Even potatoes need to be moderated. These foods feed the yeast in yeast infections so to stop it growing adjust your intake. Since these are all things you should not eat, something you should eat is yogurt. Yogurts have good bacteria in them which is what your body is lacking. It will help your body fight the yeast infection. Just remember to get sugar free yogurt – as I just told you, sugar feeds it!

An obvious but important thing to do is to wash regularly and thoroughly. Wash the infected area with great care and then ensure it is completely dried. Also change your underwear every day! The yeast thrives in the moist dark, so don’t give it what it wants!

Talk to your pharmacist, they are a great source of knowledge and can advise you on what over the counter treatments would be suitable for you. If you’re looking for a good male yeast infection treatment, there are several that can help. Just make sure you take action as soon as you think you have it. Male yeast infections should not be allowed to go untreated, especially if you have a sexual partner you may be passing it to.

Most men find it embarrassing to have a yeast infection. Actually, very often, men don’t realize they could have a yeast infection; usually they will ask if they need to get some Monistat or if some women’s medications will correct their condition. Here are a couple of methods to handle a man yeast infection the homeopathic way.

The first treatment method is the use of white vinegar. The white vinegar will destroy the yeast if thinned with water and administered to the penis. The white vinegar is deadly to the yeast infection, but to intensify the application, use Monistat ointment first.

The second method of treatment is the use of grapefruit seed extract. Adding grapefruit seed extract to your daily food intake can also be an effective treatment option. In a glass of water add a couple of drops and drink this often throughout the day. This needs to continue for a couple weeks or longer. The yeast will be killed from the inside out with this method.

Prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here is an effective method to prevent a re-occurrence of the yeast infection: excellent hygiene always is your first defense; moisture is your enemy, so keeping extra dry at all times is extremely important; be careful to towel dry extremely well after a shower and wear looser fitting jeans. Trips to the gym should include a spare set of under shorts to be sure to decrease the risk of ending up with a re-occurring yeast infection.

If you decide these homeopathic methods are not for you, there are a few specially designed treatments available on the market. However, this here isn’t medical advice, so the best thing for you to do is consult a specialist. However, these methods can bring you relief from the comfort of your own home, so in the end it’s your choice.
