Candida is a fungus that lives on the body and when overgrows leads to a recurrent yeast infection. It can be anywhere, the vagina, mouth, blood, rectum. Usually the growth is controlled by the immune system and the good bacteria in your body but sometimes things can adversely affect these which then leads to candida overgrowth.
Both men and women can get a recurrent yeast infection though it is thought of as a female problem because it is more common in women, usually as a vaginal infection. Children can also get it both as Thrush (in the mouth) and in the diaper area. In women over three quarters will or have had it and out of those 40 per cent have a recurring problem.
The vagina’s environment is acidic naturally and when that is changed it can cause a recurrent yeast infection. Usually the body is able to maintain that balance but sometimes the vaginal acid balance is disturbed and so the fungus can overgrow and lead to an infection. Factors that can cause a recurring yeast infection are:
• Stress
• Lack of sleep
• Tight and/or synthetic underwear
• Birth control pills
• A diet too high in refined foods and sugars
• Hormone changes such as pregnancy, menstruation and menopause
• Antibiotics
• Treating with the same conventional over the counter drugs that the fungus then builds a resistance to
An infection that happens four times a year is considered a recurring yeast infection. It is important to avoid things that can cause an infection such as birth control pills, starchy and sugary foods etc. Once you have control of the causing factors, then you can limit your infection chances and if one should happen use natural means to treat it.
Before you do any form of treatment however you should see your doctor to get a confirmed diagnosis as there are other infections and illnesses with similar symptoms. You can also use that opportunity to discuss treatment options with him or her.
