Yeast infections, also known as candidiasis are caused by the overgrowth of candida albicans, a fungus that lives on the body. It is a very common problem for women but it can still affect men. The two more common forms of yeast infection a man faces are Thrush (mouth) and a penile infection.

There are a few possible causes of male yeast infection including a weak immunity. As mentioned the yeast is already there on the body, but in small numbers is harmless. The immune system and the good bacteria keep it from over growing into an infection. But if the immune system is low perhaps due to cancer, diabetes, HIV, then it is easier for the fungus to multiply leading to a yeast infection, in this case a male yeast infection.

Antibiotics are also a causing factor as being on a prolonged course can lead to the good bacteria in the body being killed which again frees the fungus to grow rapidly.

It is quite possible though less common for men to get a penile infection from having unprotected sex with a woman who has a vaginal yeast infection. But it is not classed as an STD.

Symptoms are very varied and detection of a male yeast infection is not always quick because they get mistaken for other problems. With a penile infection there will be a red rash, itching and burning at the tip, as well as more general symptoms of bad breath, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, irritability, prostate problems, constipation, dry skin, indigestion and sexual dysfunction.

Antifungal treatments will normally take care of the problem – medication wise the common ones are Diflucan (fluconazole) Monistat and Nizoral. There are also natural options that are effective such as yogurt or tea tree oil. It is important to also maintain excellent hygiene standards and have your sexual partner get treated too just in case.
