Candida Albicans not only causes yeast infections in the healthy, but can also cause life threatening infections in patients who have AIDs, are going through chemotherapy or radiation treatments, or have other immune weakening diseases. That is why researchers from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s (A*STAR) Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) have been looking at how it goes from a benign form to something so life threatening.

The team found new molecular mechanisms that give scientists a better understanding of this transformation. These formerly unknown mechanisms are what are responsible for the Candida albicans infectious phase. At the start of the ‘attack’ on the patient, the oval shape changes to a filamentous shape that have thin threads coming out of the cell body. This is something Wang Yue and his team called the master controller protein. It then tells the rest of the fungus when to change from the oval to the infections filamentous form.

“The master regulator Hgc1 acts like the ‘finger’ that flips the switches to start the infection process,” said Wang.

“Our findings have uncovered detailed molecular mechanisms which define how these two proteins interact with the master ‘controller’ to cause infections. This has opened new opportunities for us to investigate further into a new range of therapeutic targets for fungal infections,” explained Wang.

A leading Candida albicans researcher Dr Peter Sudbery sees this work as very important in understanding the infectious process of the Candida. This information also helps scientists and doctors understand how the shape of cells is determined.
