When a woman is lactating it creates the perfect environment for a yeast infection , warm and moist. Unfortunately when a breast is being used to feed a baby it also becomes a place where the candida fungus can commonly thrive. Symptoms – A breast yeast infection comes with some nasty symptoms such as itchy and sore nipples and a pain that occurs when you try to scratch at an itch that never seem to go. Causes – As mentioned yeast thrives in warm and damp areas so the breast that is being used to frequently feed a baby becomes a nice breeding ground for the fungus. If you have a low immune system this can also lead to an outbreak as it is unable to stop the yeast from multiplying.
If you have been on prolonged medications particularly antibiotics this can cause a yeast infection. The antibiotics are designed to kill the bacteria that cause whatever is ailing you. But in fact they just kill all bacteria, both the bad ones you want to get rid of, and the good ones you want to keep. Those good bacteria were the micro-organisms that kept the yeast at balanced levels in your body. Without them the yeast are able to mutliply out of control. Also watch out for drugs like birth control pills as these cause hormonal changes which also make a candida infection more possible.
Treatment – This needs to be discussed with your doctor as the concern is for mother and baby. It is important to make sure that both mommy and baby are clear of all infection before you begin recommence breast feeding otherwise the cycle of infection can start up again.
