There is a species of fungus called Candida Albicans that lives on the body harmlessly unless it is able to overgrow, at which point it causes a yeast infection. It is particularly common in women – up to three quarters have been or will be affected. Usually the good bacteria also there control the numbers of the fungus, but there are factors that can destroy those good bacteria and create an imbalance that allows the fungus to grow. This can happen anywhere on the body but is more common in the mouth and genital area. Men and women can be affected and symptoms include itching, redness, white discharge, discomfort. Factors that can lead to a yeast infection are:

• Pregnancy (hormone imbalance)
• Douching and use of scented products/soaps
• Synthetic underwear that does not allow the skin to breathe
• Antibiotics (kill the good bacteria)
• Birth control pills
• Cortisone treatment
• Diabetes (raised sugar levels, and the fungus feeds off of sugar)
• Any disorder or illness that has weakened the immune system
• Keeping on wet clothing such as swimwear
• Endocrine disorders and thyroid problems

Here are some tips on how you can prevent yeast infections from occurring:

• Avoid junk food! Eat a diet that is healthy and nutritious with plenty of vegetables and fruits so that you get the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to fight the infection. Drinking lots of water is also important to flush out the toxins from your system.
• Improve your blood circulation by exercising regularly. This then makes sure nutrients from the foods you eat get to all of your body.
• Try to reduce the amount of hot baths you take.
• Diabetics really must control their blood sugar levels.
• Underwear should be washed in hot water.
• Avoid using antiseptics in that area as they kill the good bacteria.
• Tight clothing restricts the air flow and makes you sweat more. Wear loose clothing.
• Try to find a way to manage your stress effectively as this will make your immune system stronger. Techniques include yoga, meditation and deep breathing.
• Stop using air fresheners.
• Clothing should be made of a material like cotton that is breathable (other natural fibre materials include silk and linen).
• As tempting as it is, do not get out of a pool in the summer or on holiday and then lay on a lounger till you are dry. Get out of wet clothing straight away.
• Eating yogurt regularly is a great way to make sure your friendly bacteria are kept at optimal numbers.
