Though the vagina is self cleaning you still need to clean it regularly and make sure it is dried properly. Otherwise bacteria and fungus can start to breed leading to ailments such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, herpes, trichomoniasis and more. Since all of these infections have very similar symptoms it can sometimes be tricky unless you are a medical professional, to know which one you have.

A vaginal yeast infection happens when a fungus called candida albicans overgrows. It leads to symptoms such as a vaginal discharge that is unusual, thick and white or pale yellow like cottage cheese. This symptom is less common though than others. There is also sometimes a starchy or yeast odor but again many women have no odor at all. The more common symptoms are how to identify that you have an infection and they include an itching that worsens the longer you have the infection. A burning and redness as well as the vulva being sore and possibly swollen. There may also be pain when having sex and pain when urinating.

Sometimes a sufferer may confuse the burning sensation that can be felt with the infection, with a urinary tract infection. But with a vaginal yeast infection the burning that is felt is when the urine is passed and touches the sore sensitive vulva skin. On the other hand if it was a urinary tract infection the burning would be felt as soon as the urine started passing down the urinary tract, rather than just when it touches the skin of the vulva.

If a woman is unlucky enough to have yeast infections four or more times a year they are classed as having a recurring problem and this really needs to be dealt with by a doctor.
