Any woman can suffer from a yeast infection, it makes no difference her age, race or culture. There is already some yeast in the vagina, but it is at low amounts that is safe. Under certain circumstance the yeast can multiply though, leading to a vaginal yeast infection. Sometimes it is an existing medical problem that triggers an overgrowth, some women are more predisposed to them, weakened immune systems, birth control pills, diabetics and even pregnancy can all put you more at risk.

There are some hygiene products that should be avoided too as they can trigger an infection. Douching for example can upset the balance and trigger the vaginal yeast infection to multiply as can perfumed sprays or other scented products used in that area. Though it can be passed on during sex it is not classed as an STD. A candidiasis vaginal infection is relatively easy to cure though if caught early enough.

Symptoms to watch for that indicate there has been a yeast overgrowth are similar to other conditions, so even though it is important to be aware of what these signs are, it is also important to understand you still need to visit a doctor should you observe any of them. They include pain (when urinating and during sex), itching, burning and a candidiasis vaginal discharge that is white and has the consistency of cottage cheese. There is a home test that can be carried out to see whether it is a yeast infection that is bothering you. Have a glass of water next to your bed when you go to sleep and as soon as you wake up the next morning spit a few times into the water. After a while if the spit has cleared into the water you do not have a yeast infection. If it sinks to the bottom or the spit is stringy in the water and cloudy, it is possible that you have a yeast infection. The longer it takes for the spit to string, cloud or sink the more mild the infection is.

After you have a confirmed diagnosis you can begin treatment. A doctor can hep you find the right one for you. Remember to complete the full treatment, do not stop just because the symptoms have gone. For recurring cases you may need to look at your diet and other treatment options in order to become yeast free.
