Candida albicans is the most usually cause of yeast infections but anywhere up to 11% of yeast infection cases can be caused by Candida glabrata. It is important to distinguish the two because although both are yeasts from the Candida species, treatment is different. Candida glabrata is more resistant to the anti-fungal drugs that are usually successful on Candida albicans such as fluconazole or ketoconazole. This does not mean it cannot be treated, but it needs a different approach.
Candida glabrata and Candida albicans look very similar. The yeast infections they can cause to occur are much the same in symptoms and where they can occur. For a person suffering from a yeast infection the chances are it is an albicans overgrowth, but a small per cent of people can suffer from Candida glabrata overgrowth. The only way to tell which you have is to visit a doctor and for tests to be done and sent to a lab where cultures can be examined. Usually though it is patients in hospital that may have problems with Candida glabrata.

The most common form of yeast infection is mucosal vaginal yeast infections, but they are not limited to just women or just that area. What some people do not realize until they hear it from a proper diagnosis from their doctor is that there are two types of mucosal yeast infections, red form and white form.
Mucosal yeast infection means it affects one or more of the mucous parts of your body such as the mouth, the intestines or the vagina. There are two types of mucosal candidiasis though some doctors may not distinguish between the two when they diagnose you. There is the red form where the candida does not grow but invades. Then there is the white form of mucosal yeast infection also called acute pseudomembranous candidiasis.
