80% of humans across the globe have a fungus living in their gits called Candida albicans fungus. Usually it lives there without any harm like a good tenant should! But sometimes it can cause problems for its host.
Researchers studied the genome of the fungus (the genetic sequence) and found that it was dimorphic, meaning it can change form by rearranging its chromosomal structure. Very few organisms have this unique strategy of adapting. Known as phenotype switching in biological terms, studies have found the fungus can take as many as seven forms.
The problems a fungus infection can cause range in severity. It happens when the candida albicans growth is no longer being checked. This fungus is not the only thing to live in the intestines and there is a balance that is maintained between them where the growth is nullified by each other. Usual places that become targeted by the candida albicans are the mouth, the digestive system (intestines and esophagus) and the genitals. Constipation and candida are related because it largely infects the gastrointestinal tract. Worse than localised infections are systemic ones, where instead of one place being infected, it is a whole body problem, with several parts being attacked simultaneously.
