A yeast infection is also known as Candidiasis coming from the name of the group of fungi that causes it, Candida. There are several forms of Candida that live in the body but the most common cause of Candidiasis are Candida Albicans. Candida need a living host to survive and can be found on mammals including humans. It lives in its hosts digestive tract from a surprisingly early age but remains harmless most of the time. However if the immune system is compromised, defenses are weakened, healthy bacteria are eradicated and the body’s balance is upset, the fungus can overgrow. It tends to happen in warm, dark and moist areas such as the anus, genitals, mouth, under arms or folds of skin. Rarely it can lead to a systemic infection that attacks the body’s internal organs.

There are factors that can make a person more likely to get Candidiasis i.e. predisposed for a yeast infection. Some of these factors are changeable and some are not. If you are looking to prevent an infection or are trying to find out why a yeast infection keeps recurring, knowing and understanding how a person can be predisposed for a yeast infection may help you.

Factors that can make you predisposed for a yeast infection

  • Being very young or very old – at these times of life a person’s immune system is either not fully developed and is therefore not strong enough to fight an infection, or is tired and and weakened.
  • Living in a warm climate – Yeast loves warm and damp places to grow and when a person lives in a warm climate they are likely to sweat more and therefore have an environment the fungus enjoys. Changing clothes and washing regularly can help somewhat in these cases.
  • Oral birth control pills/injections – Anything that plays with your hormones can lead to a yeast infection as the natural balance of the body’s chemicals has been disturbed.
  • Pregnancy – For the same reason as above. Women in the third trimester are at the most vulnerable for getting a yeast infection and should not attempt to treat themselves. Talk to your doctor as soon as you notice the symptoms.
  • Underlying preexisting skin conditions – This includes psoriasis, lichen planus, the skin is already irritated and so is more susceptible to infection.
  • Low immune system – HIV patients and AIDs patients are much more prone to yeast infections and in fact it can be life threatening for them. Other reasons for a low immunity might be cancer treatment or low levels of immunoglobulines.
  • On a prolonged course of antibiotics – Some antibiotics when taken are not able to specify which bacteria in your body are the bad ones that need to be killed, and just kill all bacteria, including the beneficial ones that control the Candida Albicans growth.
  • Diabetes – if uncontrolled a diabetic often has high blood sugar levels which feeds the fungus and helps it grow.
  • Occlusion – This includes baby diapers, nylon pantyhose or tight pants, dental plates for cases of Thrush. The area cannot breathe, air is not circulating and it is kept damp and warm, creating a perfect place for the yeast to live and breed.
  • Malnutrition – Not getting the right minerals and vitamins that your immune system needs to stay strong means your body is unable to fight any infection.
  • Long-term corticosteroid therapy – Taken for things like bronchial asthma or chronic skin diseases.

If you have one or more of these factors then you are predisposed for a yeast infection, which means you are more likely to get one than someone who has none of these factors to deal with, or less factors than you. Some of the risks can be minimized with the help of a doctor so talk to one about it at your next check up.
