Yeast is a type of fungus and like all fungi it thrives in warm, dark and damp environments. There are many different types of fungus most of which will do no harm and some of which we can even eat like truffles and mushrooms. There are though some fungi that have the potential to do harm and one of these is Candida Albicans which is the fungus that leads to yeast infections.

This fungus is on us all the time but are controlled by the good bacteria in our body. When the fungus is allowed to grow and spread is when the yeast infection occurs. If our imune system is not functioning as it should there is not a lot our body can do about it. This article looks at three things that can cause a yeast infection to arise.

Injury or damage to the area can be one reason a yeast infection happens. Protective layers of the skin can be broken when damp and warm skin rubs against each other. In obese people this is a problem as they have more skin folds. This gives the yeast a chance to get into the skin. Other areas that have this problem are the groin, the armpits, under breasts and even between toes. If you have a tendency to be in warm steamy environments like kitchens or indoor pools you are more likely as this is the environment the yeast loves.
As already said, noramlly the good bacteria in our bodys, on our skin, will control the yeast. They do this because they want the same nutrients the yeast does and so the competition for food keeps them balanced. They also prefer an environment that yeast does not like living in and so this stops them from growing. If you take antibiotics, steroids or some other prescripted drugs these kill the good bacteria meaning the yeast can grow unchecked.

A weakened immune system can also lead to an infection. Factors that cause a weak immune system may be an illness like HIV, malnutrition, no exercise, lack of sleep or a lot of stress. Cancer is another illness that can have a poor effect. Transplant patients taking anti reject drugs can also be more prone.

Once you know what causes a yeast infection you can take steps to change your lifestyle or avoid situations that are going to put you more at risk.
